Career Information

Completing this program will prepare students for positions in medical offices, surgery centers, and hospitals. Medical Assisting is a multi-skilled profession. There are many paths a certified medical assistant can take, and they are not limited to any area of clinical, laboratory, or administrative tasks. As a multi-skilled healthcare professional, a medical assistant typically works in outpatient settings like clinics and medical offices and is trained to perform various duties.

Clinically, one can work in the following areas but is not limited to other job responsibilities:

  • Greeting patients and bringing them to the examination room
  • Measuring vital signs
  • Assisting clinicians with examinations, procedures, and minor surgery
  • Administering injections of medications and vaccines
  • Drawing blood
  • Applying dressings and bandaging
  • Performing wound care
  • Sterilizing and disinfecting medical instruments and equipment
  • Performing limited laboratory testing
  • Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens

Administratively, one can work in the following areas but is not limited to other job responsibilities:

  • Medical coding
  • Electronic medical records
  • Insurance coding
  • Billing
  • Scheduling
  • Office management

Physicians and physician offices need multi-skilled clinicians who handle many aspects of the job and its departments. They are looking for someone who is certified and holds a degree. In these challenging times, being skilled in many areas is an asset. The job outlook is endless. You can work one-on-one with the physician and patients; form a positive and nurturing relationship with the patient.
