Hunting and Shooting Sports Management - Curriculum

Hunting and Shooting Sports Management is designed to prepare students for a career in hunting and shooting sports retail and private businesses.

Course work includes introduction to shooting sports, gun shop management, sports hunting, and gunsmithing. Business concepts such as management, buying and merchandizing, and advertising and sales promotion also are covered.

The curriculum was developed with input from retailers and sportsmen who recognized the need for trained individuals in the industry.

  1. Graduates will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of business and the functions of management.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to apply basic accounting principles, theories, and procedures for analyzing, recording, and reporting financial data.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate skills in marketing and professional selling.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to make and defend ethical and legal decisions in a business setting.
  5. Graduates will demonstrate a basic understanding of organizational behavior and human resource management.
  6. Graduates will demonstrate a basic understanding of management in a globally interdependent, diverse business world.
  7. Graduates will demonstrate communication skills that include the abilities to read, comprehend, and analyze information; and to express ideas effectively through written and oral communications.
  8. Graduates will use computational skills to become sufficiently numerate to function as a member of society.
  9. Graduates will demonstrate technology skills including accessing and evaluating information, as well as communicating using technology.
  10. Graduates will identify, explain, and demonstrate the rules, regulations, and equipment used in various shooting sports currently in the United States.
  11. Graduates will be able to safely and legally start working a firearms counter.
  12. Graduates will be able to identify, explain, and demonstrate the firearms and related equipment needed to hunt locally and nationally.
  13. Graduates will be able to discuss sports management needs with customers and receive firearms for gunsmithing work.
