Upcoming Concert to Include Costume Contest for Kids

The Pitt Community College Symphony Orchestra will perform at Edgecombe Community College on Sunday, October 29.

A free concert by the Pitt Community College Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, October 29, will feature a Halloween costume contest for kids.

The lucky winner of the contest will have an opportunity to conduct the orchestra.

The concert, which begins at 3 p.m., is the second of six shows in Season Thirteen of the Edgecombe Performance Series. All performance series events take place in Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus, located at 2009 West Wilson Street.

With more than sixty musicians, the Pitt Community College Symphony Orchestra is a collaborative effort between the college and the community to offer an educational orchestra for both students and members of the community. The philosophy of the orchestra is to bring together musicians from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.

The program is currently in its seventh season, under the direction of Michael Stephenson. On Sunday, October 29, the group will perform in Tarboro for the first time. Their annual fall concert will feature music appropriate for Halloween by the Russian composer Alexander Borodin (Polovtsian Dances) and the Norwegian composer Edward Grieg (Peer Gynt Suite, No. 1).

Several works written just for winds and the Pitt Community College Flute Choir also will be part of the program. The concert will conclude with a stirring rendition of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” performed by the entire Pitt Community College Symphony Orchestra.

The event is very family friendly, and the annual Halloween Costume Contest for children twelve and under will certainly be a crowd favorite. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and enter the contest. The winner will have an opportunity to conduct the orchestra.

General admission is free to the public, and no tickets are required. The group will accept donations to benefit the Pitt Community College Music Fund.

Tickets for all other Edgecombe Performance Series events are available through the ECC Box Office on the Tarboro campus. Tickets for the December 6 NC Symphony Holiday Pops and March 2 Le Cirque Esprit events are also available online at etix.com. Season tickets are available through the ECC Box Office only.
