The Historic Preservation Trades program at Edgecombe Community College will offer a broad slate of weekend genealogy classes this spring.

ECC is one of only two community colleges in the state that offers a program in historic preservation and preservation-related trades.

The program began in 2008. Two certificate programs, one in Preservation Research and one in Historic Construction, and a two-year degree program in Historic Preservation Technology comprise the curriculum.

In addition, weekend workshops that focus on historic preservation topics are offered on the Tarboro campus. These classes are held on Saturdays at the Norfleet House, which is the cornerstone of the Historic Preservation program. Built around 1810, this historic home was moved to campus in 2009 and has been renovated by students.

If permitted under COVID-19 restrictions, the annual Preservation Trades Fair will be held on Saturday, April 24, at the Norfleet House. Guests will see exhibits and demonstrations on preservation involving masonry, roofing, woodworking, window repair, and other crafts and trades.

Other spring offerings will focus on genealogy topics. Genealogy classes will not be offered during summer or fall semesters this year, so be sure to sign up for these workshops now. Following are upcoming courses:

  • Understanding Census Records – January 30
  • Local and State Records – February 13
  • Cemetery Preservation – February 27
  • Genealogy Websites – March 6
  • Education and Your Ancestors – March 6
  • Researching Property – March 27
  • Military Records – May 15

All of these classes are taught by Monika Fleming, Historic Preservation program coordinator. In addition to genealogy, she teaches classes at ECC in architectural history, American and NC history, and cultural history.
