Basic Skills Plus Implementation Under Way

A new Basic Skills Plus program is under way at Edgecombe Community College.

Basic Skills Plus provides accelerated job training for students seeking a high school diploma or its equivalent. The introductory career pathway is Nurse Aide I, with plans for expansion in the spring semester.

The program enables GED and Adult High School students to earn an occupational credential while completing their studies in the GED program.

“We believe that Basic Skills Plus will give our students an opportunity to realize their dreams sooner than they had anticipated,” says Basic Skills Instructor LaShawnda Washington. “Our students will have some of the same opportunities as curriculum students and hopefully will continue their education even further after getting a taste of college life.”

College and Career Readiness Director Jerry Harper is teaching an advanced math class in Basic Skills Plus. “We have high expectations for each student who enrolls in the program,” he says. “We will be following their progress in their GED quest as well as in earning their credentials in an occupational program of study.”
