N.C. Rep. Joe P. Tolson to Speak at ECC Graduation

 



N.C. Rep. Joe P. Tolson will be the keynote speaker at Edgecombe Community College’s Commencement exercises on May 9.

N.C. Representative Joe P. Tolson will give the keynote address during Commencement exercises at Edgecombe Community College on Friday, May 9.

Commencement begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus.

ECC’s Class of 2008 comprises 306 students, including 249 degree and diploma students, 51 GED students, and 6 Adult High School students. College officials are expecting a capacity crowd.

Rep. Tolson is a native of Edgecombe County and was raised on a family farm. A graduate of Edgecombe County Public Schools, he attended Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, and received his bachelor’s degree in 1963.

His first professional job was teaching in the Chesapeake, Virginia, public school system, where he also served as an assistant football coach.

In 1970, Rep. Tolson returned to Edgecombe County and began his career with Edgecombe Community College. Over the years, he served as director of adult basic education, director of extension, and director of the Rocky Mount campus. He developed and supervised an extensive adult education program, which at the time was among the larger programs in the N.C. Community College System.

He retired from Edgecombe Community College in 1996 to fill the unexpired term of Rep. E. Norris Tolson. Rep. Joe Tolson continues to represent the 23rd District, and he is presently serving his 6th term in the N.C. House.

During this current session of the General Assembly, Rep. Tolson serves as chairman of the Appropriations Committee, vice chairman of the Energy and Energy Efficiency Committee, and vice chairman of the Science and Technology Committee. He is a member of committees on agriculture, education, education subcommittee on community colleges, ethics, select committee on high speed Internet in rural areas, and pensions and retirement.
