UNC Kidney Center Partners with ECC

Four UNC Kidney Center staff members led focus groups at ECC on March 15 to gather information that will be used to develop educational outreach programs for the Edgecombe community. The UNC Kidney Center is partnering with Edgecombe Community College to combat kidney disease in North Carolina. Among counties statewide, Edgecombe has the unfortunate distinction of having the highest rate of kidney disease.

The UNC Kidney Center is developing educational outreach programs on kidney disease with emphasis on diabetes and hypertension, the leading causes of kidney disease.

Edgecombe is among the first group of 17 counties that will be included in the three-year study. Other counties in this first group are Anson and Montgomery.

On March 15, four UNC Kidney Center staff traveled to the ECC campus to hold two focus group sessions. One of the groups was composed of nursing students; the other included general students, staff, and faculty. According to Donna Harwood, director of the UNC Kidney Center, the focus groups were held to "gather information from participants about how much they already know about kidney disease. Based on our findings today, we will develop educational outreach programs for the community."

Harwood expects that the UNC Kidney Center will sponsor kidney disease screening for Edgecombe residents this summer. Screening locations and dates have not been determined.
