ECC Hosting Lecture on China

Edgecombe Community College will host a lecture on China and its culture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 30.
The lecture, set for the McIntyre Building Auditorium on the Tarboro campus, is the inaugural event of the college's global education plan.

Presenters Tony Lin and Andy Wong, both natives of China, will share their experiences of life in China compared to life in the United States. In particular, they will discuss their upbringing in China, the reasons they moved to the United States, and the differences in the Chinese and American educational systems.
Businessman Tony Lin, who owns Lin's Super Buffet in Tarboro, was born in mainland China. He moved to the U.S. at age 22, and, at age 39, is a very successful restaurateur.

Andy Wong also was born in mainland China. Formerly of Tarboro, he is a graduate student studying engineering at N.C. State University.

"ECC is committed to educating our community and raising awareness of the many cultures that influence our region and economy," says J. Lynn Cale, associate vice president of instruction and coordinator of the event. "We need to educate ourselves about other cultures so we can understand, respect, and appreciate each other no matter our differences. Our diversity is what makes us so unique."

A 15-member global education committee was created at ECC in fall 2005 to look at how the college can incorporate global education and globalization issues in its mission. The committee developed a strategic plan that includes the establishment of a Global Issues Lecture Series for ECC students and Edgecombe residents.

The lecture on China is the first event of this series. All those who attend the lecture will receive a coupon for 50% off of a regular price for a lunch or dinner meal at Lin's Super Buffet.

For more information on the lecture or on ECC's global education plan, please contact J. Lynn Cale at (252) 823-5166, ext. 203.
