New Community College Caucus Announced by U.S. House

Edgecombe Community College officials were present in Washington, D.C., last Wednesday when Congress unveiled its first Community College Caucus. Nearly 200 community college presidents and trustees from around the country were gathered in the nation's capital for their annual association convention last week and were present for the announcement.

Among those present were ECC President Dr. Deborah Lamm and ECC Trustees Helen Collins and Gloria Wiggins-Hicks.

Under the direction of U.S. Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), the bipartisan caucus was formed to emphasize the important and unique role that community colleges play in the American education system and to educate members of Congress about the challenges many of these institutions face.

"Community colleges are the cornerstone of our new economy," Congressman Miller said. "Every year, one adult North Carolinian in eight takes a community college course. I wanted to start the Community College Caucus to help educate folks in Washington about the good work our community colleges do back home." Last year, 800,000 students were served by the state's 58 community colleges.

"We are grateful to Congressman Miller for leading the way in making more visible the community college and its pivotal role in our nation's economic growth," commented Dr. Lamm.

"This initiative will increase awareness of the issues that are common to all community colleges, and we look forward to being a part of the national conversation that will underscore our critical role in higher education," she added.

In 2004-2005, about 2,600 students were enrolled in ECC degree, diploma, and certificate programs each semester. The college's continuing education programs served approximately 7,100 students.

"Our hope for the future is to have the most skilled workers in the world," added Congressman Miller. "Our children cannot leave high school without a degree the way so many of their parents did. And when they get their degree, they need to know that their education is just beginning."

Joining Miller as cochairs of the caucus are Reps. Mike Castle (R-DE), David Wu (D-OR) and Roger Wicker (R-MS). The caucus currently has 62 members.

During the convention of community college presidents and trustees, Dr. Lamm, Collins, and Wiggins-Hicks met with Saul Hernandez, legislative assistant to Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC). Also, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) and Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) addressed the North Carolina presidents and trustees.
