Linda Harrison, program chair of surgical technology at Edgecombe Community College, has been named a Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists. The designation of Fellow recognizes individuals who have upheld the highest standards of the surgical technology profession. It also acknowledges outstanding professional activities. Harrison was named a Fellow at the recent Association of Surgical Technologists 38th Annual Conference in New Orleans. She is chair of the association’s Education and Standards of Practice Committee and president-elect of its local chapter. She received the first Educator of the Year Award from the association in 2004. Surgical technology is a one-year diploma program at ECC that enrolls a maximum of 15 students each fall. The program prepares students to assist in the care of surgical patients in the perioperative setting and to function as a member of the surgical team by arranging supplies and instruments, maintaining aseptic technique, preparing patients for surgery, and assisting the surgeon during operations. The program is highly regarded among health care professionals, and it boasts a 100 percent hire rate for its graduates. “I enjoy seeing people succeed when they make an effort to succeed,
and I will do anything in my power to help them succeed,” says
Harrison. “I push my students. When they finish here they have
more self-confidence, and they know they can go out and get a job.”
