ECC Launches New Engineering Program with NCSU

New to the slate of offerings at Edgecombe Community College this fall is the Associate in Science/Pre-major in Engineering. This collaborative program unites ECC with North Carolina State University and the Gateway Technology Center in Rocky Mount.

Students take a structured curriculum that begins with their first semester of study at ECC. They complete general education, science, and math courses toward the associate in science degree at the community college.

Selected sophomore-level engineering courses will be delivered from the Raleigh campus using interactive video to the Gateway Technology Center, which is located near the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College. These classes will be led by N.C. State instructors. Students in the Gateway classroom can see and hear the professor on a large video screen, ask questions, and participate in class discussions.

Upon completion of the associate in science degree, students may begin their engineering course work at N.C. State provided they are accepted into its engineering program. Specific requirements for transfer into N.C. State’s College of Engineering can be found at: http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/students/docs/transferreq.html.

“This is a terrific opportunity for our students,” says Dr. Alan Stephenson, dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences at ECC. “The new pre-engineering degree program increases the educational options for Edgecombe students, and taking N.C. State-delivered engineering courses while enrolled at ECC will give these students a genuine sense of what it would be like to attend the university.”

Registration for fall classes at ECC continues through Thursday, July 20. Final registration is August 16 and 17. Classes begin August 18.

For more information on the new Associate in Science/Pre-major in Engineering degree, call Dr. Alan Stephenson at 823-5166, ext. 221.
