Dr. Tom Fleming, 83, chair of the college’s Board of Trustees, died on July 4. He suffered a massive stroke on Monday evening, July 2. Dr. Fleming had served as a trustee since 1971 and as board chair since 1978. “He served the board and college well with his wisdom and integrity. He will be missed,” says ECC President Dr. Deborah Lamm. “Throughout his 29-year tenure as chair, his commitment to high standards not only guided and nurtured the college but also encouraged and inspired those around him,” she adds. “His impact on the development and success of the college will be his legacy.” Dr. Fleming graduated from Wake Forest College and Southern College of Dentistry (now Emory University). He practiced in Tarboro from 1949 until his retirement in 1992, leaving briefly to serve in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Dr. Fleming also served on the board of trustees of Campbell University. He was a member of the Tarboro Rotary Club for 58 years and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Tarboro. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise; three children; a brother; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Thomas Smith Fleming Scholarship Fund at ECC or to the First Baptist Church in Tarboro.
