General Henry H. Shelton will give the keynote address during Commencement exercises at Edgecombe Community College on Friday, August 3. Commencement begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus. ECC’s Class of 2007 comprises 292 degree and diploma students and 59 GED students. College officials are expecting a capacity crowd. General Shelton is a native of Tarboro. He received a bachelor’s degree in textiles from N.C. State University and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Infantry through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He spent the next 38 years in a variety of command and staff positions in the U.S. and Vietnam. He served two combat tours in Vietnam and was a commander at Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Fort Drum, New York. Selected for promotion to brigadier general in 1988, General Shelton served two years in the Operations Directorate of the Joint Staff. A year later, he began an assignment in the Gulf War, following which he was promoted to major general and assumed command of the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg. In 1996, he was promoted to general and became commander in chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command. General Shelton became the 14th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1997 and served two two-year terms under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He retired in 2001. He holds a master’s degree from Auburn University and has attended Harvard University, the Air Command and Staff College, and the National War College. Among his many military awards, General Shelton has received four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, two Army Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, and the Purple Heart. He has been decorated for distinguished service by 16 foreign governments. Congress bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal on General Shelton in 2002.
