In today's day and age, technology is just a click away, or in this case, a video screen away.

On Tuesday, five students in Johanna Owens' business communications class at Edgecombe Community College participated in a showcase of new technology by the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh that will allow the public to "visit" the museum's exhibits and programs via two-way video conferencing and online video streaming. They were joined by five honor psychology students from A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis.

The students had a brief lesson on oral histories and World War II by ECC English and Humanities Department Chair Monika Fleming. She gave them tips on conducting interviews, which included developing a research plan, oral history topics, planning interviews, guidelines, sample questions, and sample resources.

Museum educator Suzanne Mewborn showed video clips of interviews of North Carolina senior citizens describing their experiences in World War II.

Allen Barnes, 21, is a student in Owens' class. "It was interesting," Barnes said. "Monika had some good tips on interviewing." He added that this experience will help in class because "we are currently discussing interviewing."

"We did have some technical glitches," Fleming said. "However, the concept is good. It provides a good way to share information. I think the kids were in awe of the technology."

According to a news release, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) technology grant is part of the Museums for America grants program. Museums for America is the largest of IMLS's grant programs and provides more than $16 million in grants to support the role of museums in American society.

The IMLS is an independent federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities
