Writer Looking for Stories for ECC History

Do you remember when Edgecombe Community College was founded in 1967? Or when it opened its doors to students in fall 1968, holding classes in an old prison building? Did you attend classes at the college? Do you have a story to share?

Beginning August 2007, ECC will celebrate its 40th year as an institution of higher learning. Monika Fleming, ECC English/humanities department chair and local historian, is developing a history of the college, and she’s looking for contributions.

Fleming says she wants to create a personal account of the life of the college as opposed to developing a dry listing of facts and figures. “The history of the college will best be told by the people who have helped shape it - its students, faculty, and community members who have witnessed and participated in its growth,” she says.

“If someone remembers an instructor, a class, or an event at the college, I’d love to hear about it. I’d like the book to be a collection of personal stories.”

Fleming is also looking for photos to publish to give the book more visual appeal.

If you have a story or photo to share, please contact Fleming at 823-5166, ext. 241, or flemingm@edgecombe.edu.
