A youth training program in Rocky Mount is working to teach students about the world of work. The Youth Training and Education Program (YTEP), part of the Workforce Development and Training Center, conducted its first of a five-part employment workshop series recently. The workshop was held at the Workforce Development and Training Center, which is located at 101 Tarboro Street. The center operates through federal funds from the Workforce Investment Act, and it is affiliated with Edgecombe Community College. The workshop featured Nancy Evans, employment coordinator at Nash Healthcare Systems, and Sharon Williams, employment counselor at the Nash Employment Security Commission/Nash Edgecombe Joblink. The students, who are working toward their GED or Adult High School diploma, received instructions and guidance on what employers are looking for, how to compete for jobs, and current job openings. The presenters also discussed the benefits of obtaining a GED/AHS diploma and explained that pursuing advanced degrees offered at Edgecombe Community College can help students secure rewarding careers. In addition, the workshop gave students an opportunity to interact with presenters. Jomona Rogers, a GED student on ECC’s Rocky Mount campus, served as the workshop facilitator. “I enjoyed the event and learned a lot. It was challenging, but I got over being nervous and took care of business. I am looking forward to the next event,” she said.
