Two administrators from the College of the Albemarle (COA) in Elizabeth City met with Early College officials on January 19. COA has received a grant to create a program that will provide a second chance for a high school education for recent dropouts and those on the verge of dropping out. COA staff met with Early College teachers, Principal Marcia Edge, and College Liasion and High School Coordinator Kathy Webb. On January 26, seven members of the Southeastern Community College Steering Committee also traveled to ECC to take a close look at the Edgecombe Early College. "We all share the same goal - to provide an alternative environment for students who do not benefit from the traditional high school setting," notes Webb. "We are very excited by the interest in our program." The Early College begins with the ninth grade and ends with the 13th year of study. In five years, students earn a high school diploma and an associate's degree or two years of university credit toward a four-year degree. Community colleges and school systems statewide are taking note of the success of the Edgecombe Early College. Educators from Greene, Chatham, and Johnston counties visited the Early College last fall.
