Advisory Board Night Brings 200 to ECC

John Gessaman, president and CEO of Carolinas Gateway Partnership, spoke at Advisory Board Night on February 5. “Our key to economic growth is education,” he said.

More than 200 Edgecombe Community College department chairs and instructors and local community leaders attended Advisory Board Night at the college on February 5.

John Gessaman, president and CEO of Carolinas Gateway Partnership, spoke to the group on economic development in the Twin Counties area. He suggested that key areas for future job growth are technology-led manufacturing, health and life sciences, food production and processing, and distribution.

“Our key to economic growth is education,” Gessaman said. “We need a very highly skilled and educated workforce.”

Following his remarks, the advisory boards met to evaluate and suggest improvements to ECC’s programs. Twenty-eight program areas of the college, such as business administration, cosmetology, and nursing, have advisory boards, which consist of six to ten members.

More than 70 businesses and organizations are represented on the boards. The goal of the advisory boards is to inform, advise, and assist with planning, implementing, and evaluating the programs and services of the college.
