ECC Symposium Will Explore Global Sustainability Topics

UNC World View Director Charlé LaMonica will deliver the keynote address at the Global Education Spring Symposium at Edgecombe Community College next week, March 9-10. She will deliver remarks at 4 p.m. Thursday in McBryde Auditorium, Biotechnology and Medical Simulation Center, Rocky Mount campus.

Edgecombe Community College will focus on global sustainability next week during the 2017 Global Education Spring Symposium at the college’s Rocky Mount campus.

“Our Beautiful World: Sustainability in the Arts and Environment” is the theme of the two-day event, set for Thursday and Friday, March 9-10.

The symposium is free and open to the public.

Events kick off at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in McBryde Auditorium in the Biotechnology and Medical Simulation Center. Stephen Herring, religion and geography instructor, will lead a panel discussion on the disconnect between information and emotion.

ECC President Dr. Deborah Lamm will provide opening remarks at 3:30 p.m.

At 4 p.m., Charlé LaMonica, director of UNC World View and keynote speaker for the symposium, will deliver remarks on “Global Sustainability through Global Citizenship.”

UNC World View offers professional training in global issues to educators in North Carolina’s schools, community colleges, and universities.

LaMonica joined World View in 2013. She previously was director of international studies at Charlotte Country Day School and the school’s World View liaison.

Friday events at the college begin at 8 a.m. with a fun and engaging round of “Sustainability Jeopardy” in Barnes Auditorium.

Concurrent sessions will be held at 9 a.m. “Sustainable Art,” led by Carole Mehle, English/Humanities instructor and symposium chair, will be the focus in McBryde Auditorium, and “Multiculturalism and Law Enforcement: Is There a Disconnect” will be discussed in Barnes Auditorium by Rick Basile, Criminal Justice program chair.

Additional concurrent sessions will meet at 10 a.m. Suzi Shippen-Wagner, Surgical Technology program chair, will talk about Sole Hope, a charitable organization that provides shoes for children in Africa. This discussion takes place in McBryde Auditorium

Also at 10 a.m., Carole Mehle will lead a discussion on global initiatives at ECC in Barnes Auditorium.

Closing remarks at 11 a.m. will be presented by Mehle and Dr. Harry Starnes, vice president of instruction, in Barnes Auditorium.

The Global Education Spring Symposium is sponsored by the Diversity and Global Connections Committee to bring cultural awareness to the college and local community.
