J. Lynn Cale, associate vice president of instruction at Edgecombe Community College, has been elected vice chair of the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council (UCPLC).

The council was formed to provide higher educational opportunities through a collective effort of the North Carolina Community College System, the University of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.

The goal of the council is to achieve UNC Tomorrow recommendations to increase access to higher education through UNC institutions and community colleges.

Cale has served on the UCPLC for the past 10 years. The council, which meets six times annually, covers a five-county region: Edgecombe, Halifax, Nash, Northampton, and Wison counties.

The primary focus of the UCPLC is K-16 education, workforce development, and health care education. The council is based at the Gateway Technology Center on the campus of NC Wesleyan College.

Cale is a resident of Tarboro. Another Edgecombe County native, Joe Tolson, is this year’s chair of the UCPLC. Tolson is a former member of the NC House of Representatives.
