College Employee Receives Citizenship Award

College and Career Readiness Administrative Assistant Viola Harris, who serves as an Edgecombe County commissioner, received the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award during a recent event in Tarboro. Shown with her is her husband, Mitchell.

Viola Harris, administrative assistant in ECC’s Office of College and Career Readiness, received the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award during the MLK Commemorative Banquet held recently in Tarboro.

Harris is a member of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners. She is serving her fourth term as a commissioner.

The award honors Harris for her many contributions to the area, particularly for her work in the community during and after flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew last October. Harris spearheaded fundraising efforts to give Christmas to 100 children in Edgecombe County.

She also helped College and Career Readiness students impacted by the flood.

Harris was nominated for the award by Doris Stith, director of Community Enrichment, and Odessa Tillery, a member of the Edgecombe Entrepreneur Organization.
