How can a high school student know what career path to choose? Edgecombe Community College and Edgecombe County Public Schools have partnered to offer three programs called “academies” to help high school students better understand their interests and their choices. A Computer Studies Academy is available at SouthWest Edgecombe and Tarboro high schools. An Industrial and Engineering Technologies Academy is available at North Edgecombe and SouthWest. A Medical and Health Sciences Academy is offered at Tarboro High. The academies offer a structured curriculum that begins with the 9th grade. Students cover introductory topics their freshman and sophomore years, learning basic principles and terminology related to the field. In their junior and senior years, they take college-level courses. In the Medical and Health Sciences Academy, for example, 9th graders study allied health science, and 10th graders study medical science. Juniors study medical terminology and medical law and ethics. Seniors take anatomy and physiology and a second, more advanced medical science course. Students who successfully complete these academies are eligible for admission into related degree programs at ECC. “We hope that our academies are helping Edgecombe students learn more about their interests, their aptitudes, and career opportunities,” says J. Lynn Cale, associate vice president of curriculum at the college. “If they will get serious about their futures while they’re in high school, they will be far ahead of the pack when they graduate.” To learn more about the high school academies, contact J.
