NCCCS Official Helps Launch Fall Semester

Keith Brown, an official with the N.C. Community College System, spoke at the college's fall semester kickoff on August 14.

Keith Brown, N.C. Community College System associate vice president of planning, accountability, research and evaluation, helped the college kick off its fall semester on Tuesday, August 14, with remarks about institutional effectiveness and the SACS reaffirmation process.

ECC is currently in the midst of the reaffirmation process, with an on-site peer review scheduled in fall 2008.

“Complacency is the death knell to an educational institution,” he said.

Brown discussed five questions that he said are central to the SACS self-study:
1. Are students learning what we intend them to learn?
2. Can they apply it to the real world?
3. Are we serving our students well?
4. Can we improve?
5. What is the real value of an education obtained at Edgecombe Community College?

“Our primary focus is students and student success. Our role is to facilitate their success,” Brown added.

In other business at the fall semester kickoff, college officials provided updates on activities in their areas.
