State and local officials along with members of the Edgecombe community joined the college family on October 3 and 4 to celebrate Edgecombe Community College’s 40th anniversary.

About 250-300 gathered in Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus on October 3 for a ceremony of dedication and renewal. Speakers included Martin Lancaster, president of the N.C. Community College System, and Donald Morris, mayor of Tarboro.

“This is a college that serves its community well,” Lancaster said. “The performance of this college is truly something to be proud of.”

Mayor Morris presented ECC President Dr. Deborah Lamm with a resolution from the Town of Tarboro honoring the college’s contributions to the area for 40 years.

“Edgecombe Community College has never faltered,” Morris said. “It is always the first to reach out to new businesses, offering to train employees and ready them for the workforce.”

ECC trustees also participated in the ceremony, including Nancy Williams, Jonathan Felton, James Taylor, Jessie Jones, Bernice Pitt, James Long, Gladys Shelton, Helen Collins, and Wick Baker.

Charlie Harrell, chairman of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners, spoke on behalf of the commissioners. Dr. Hartwell Fuller shared the history of the institution, and Dr. Lamm spoke about its future. Four buildings were dedicated or rededicated, and three areas within one of these buildings were dedicated.

The Charles B. McIntyre Building (Building A) was rededicated. It was named in 1976 to honor longtime ECC president Charlie McIntyre. McIntyre served as president of the college from 1970 until his death in 1994.

The R.M. Fountain Building (Building B) also was rededicated. It was named in memory of Reginald Fountain in 1971. Fountain was chairman of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners when the college was formed in 1967.

The J.F. Havens Building (Building E) was named in memory of Jonathan “Jack” Havens, who served as chairman of the ECC Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1978.

The Arts, Civic and Technology Center was renamed in memory of Dr. Thomas S. Fleming, chairman of the ECC Board of Trustees from 1978 until his death in July 2007. This building was completed in 2004.

Within the Fleming Building, two wings and a conference room were named.

The Consolidated Diesel Company Conference Room honors the very generous support given by Consolidated Diesel toward construction of the building.

The Nina W. Fountain Center for Continuing Education honors Fountain, who was president of the ECC Foundation from 1984 until 2004.

The Hartwell H. Fuller Center for Curriculum Instruction honors Dr. Hartwell H. Fuller, who served as president of ECC from 1994 until his retirement in 2004. He had been an ECC employee since 1968.

Following the ceremony of dedication and renewal, guests attended a reception in Mobley Atrium. Campus tours and program demonstrations followed the Tarboro reception.

About 125 were on hand October 4 to celebrate the college’s 40th anniversary on the Rocky Mount campus.

The highlight of the day was the dedication of the main building in honor of Guy E. Barnes, a driving force in the establishment of the Rocky Mount campus. He was an ECC trustee for 24 years, from 1968 to 1992.

Trustee Jean Bailey led the dedication with remarks on Barnes. Speakers included Norma Turnage, a member of the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges, and Rocky Mount Mayor Fred Turnage. ECC trustees Jerry Spruell and Jonathan Felton also participated.

Norma Turnage, a member of the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges, said, “Guy would be so proud of the growth of this institution. For 40 years it has provided Edgecombe and surrounding communities with a chance to dream a new dream and achieve a new goal.”

Mayor Fred Turnage presented Dr. Lamm with a resolution from the City of Rocky Mount congratulating the college on its 40-year milestone.

“Education is the key to meeting the challenges we face in eastern North Carolina,” Mayor Turnage said. “I am confident that ECC will remain at the forefront of addressing these challenges.”

Guests attended a reception and participated in campus tours and program demonstrations following the Rocky Mount ceremony of dedication and renewal.

Employees, retirees, and their spouse or guest attended a 40th anniversary gala on the evening of October 5 in Mobley Atrium. Heavy hors d’oeuvers and dancing were featured.

Sponsors of the 40th anniversary events were Embarq, BB&T, Edgecombe-Martin County Electric Membership Corporation, and State Farm Insurance.

The ECC 40th Anniversary Celebration Committee members were Anne Lewis, chair, Karen Andrus, Marie Bass, Eleanor Battle-Sharpe, Lynn Cale, Linda Ellis, Charlie Harrell, Jackie Heath, Gwen Hyman, Michael Jordan, Dr. Deborah Lamm, Nancy Lovett, Mary Miller, Leigh Moore, Pam Moseley, Krista Mosley, Charlotte O’Neal, Maria Ortega, Mattie Powell, Carolyn Sherrill, Dr. Kristi Snuggs, and Ralph Webb.
