Wick Baker, president of Heritage Hospital in Tarboro, has been named to the Edgecombe Community College Board of Trustees. Baker fills the position formerly held by longtime board chair Dr. Thomas Fleming, who died in July. Baker says, “I started my college career at a community college, as did my brother, who is now a professor at the University of Michigan School of Business, as did both my sons, who have gone on to earn their bachelor's degrees and are now enrolled in graduate schools. I know firsthand the value of a community college education.” Baker is a native of Trumbull, Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and a master’s in health services administration degree from Mississippi College. He is a member of the Tarboro Rotary Club, the Tarboro Edgecombe Chamber of Commerce, and the Furman Mathewson Trust board. Baker’s professional affiliations include membership in the American College of Healthcare Executives and the N.C. Hospital Association. He serves on the boards of HealthEast and Area L AHEC. He adds, “Heritage Hospital has always enjoyed its partnership with Edgecombe Community College, and the college does important work in preparing future health care providers. “By being a member of the ECC board, I hope to help the college continue to be a leader in providing a quality community college educational experience for students from all walks of life in eastern North Carolina and enhance the college’s partnerships with Heritage Hospital and University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina.” Members of the ECC Board of Trustees are appointed by three entities: four trustees each are appointed by the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners, the Edgecombe County Board of Education, and the governor. Baker’s seat is an Edgecombe County Board of Education appointment. “He’ll do a tremendous job,” says Jonathan Felton,
chair of the ECC Board of Trustees. “He runs a good hospital; I’ve
always been very impressed with the service the hospital provides. Filling
Dr. Fleming’s seat will be a challenge, but I have do doubt that
Mr. Baker will be a great asset to our board and to the college.”
