Dr. Deborah Lamm, president of Edgecombe Community College, has been selected as one of the 100 East Carolina University women whose profiles will be featured in a centennial publication entitled A Legacy of Leadership: One Hundred Incredible ECU Women. This year marks a yearlong centennial celebration of the founding of the university. Dr. Lamm holds an M.A.Ed. degree in English education from ECU. She began her current post as president of ECC in 2004. A 27-year veteran of the North Carolina Community College System, she served as vice president of curriculum instruction at Southeastern Community College prior to joining ECC. Previously, she held administrative and academic positions at Lenoir Community College. In addition to her M.A.Ed. from ECU, Dr. Lamm holds an Ed.D. degree in higher education administration from N.C. State University and a bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from UNC-Greensboro. She earned both of her graduate degrees while working full-time, attending evening and weekend classes. Dr. Lamm’s numerous professional affiliations include membership in the American Association of University Women, the National Council of Instructional Administrators’ Association, and the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents. A leader among North Carolina educators, she was a North Carolina Community College System Dallas Herring Fellow nominee in 2003 and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Higher Education Honor Society that same year. In 2002, Dr. Lamm participated in the World View Presidential Leadership Program in Global Education and in 2004-2005, Leadership North Carolina. Dr. Lamm serves on the board of directors of the Carolinas Gateway Partnership, the Tarboro Edgecombe Chamber of Commerce, the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, and the Community in Schools of the Rocky Mount Region. She also serves on the Area L AHEC Regional Advisory Committee; the AHEC-Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, and Halifax (NEWH) Council; the policy council of the NEWH Consortium; and the NCCCS Global Education Executive Board. The women being honored by East Carolina University are in public service, the performing arts, fine arts, business and industry, sports, education, health sciences, media, research, and other professional fields. A special event in October will pay tribute to their legacy of outstanding achievement and leadership.
