About 200 attended a celebration of black history at Edgecombe Community College on February 27. The event was held in Barnes Auditorium on the Rocky Mount campus.

Included in the packed audience were eighth graders from West Edgecombe Middle School and Rocky Mount City Council members Reuben Blackwell, Andre Knight, and Lois Watkins.

ECC’s Basic Skills Department sponsored the event, which featured remarks by Dr. Darryl Canady, pastor of the Jackson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church in Wilson. Special music included pianist and ECC computer information technology instructor Kevin Egypt; vocalists Deborah Barnes, the Fountain Correctional Center for Women choir, the Mark Green Family, and Tyrone Neville, an ECC Basic Skills student.

Youth on a Mission Mime Team performed a mime dance. The dancers, Detrail and Devonte Jenkins, are in the ninth grade at SouthWest Edgecombe High School.

ECC Basic Skills students Jerry Wright, Liz Mitchell, and Tracey Jenkins also participated in the program.
