Treat Yourself to a Class This Summer

 

Learn how to get fit and stay well at Edgecombe Community College this summer. The college is offering more than 200 classes for physical and mental enrichment during summer semester.

Registration for summer classes runs April 17 through April 27. Classes begin May 21 and end August 1.

For the first time, the college will offer several general physical education courses. PED 110 –- Fit and Well for Life meets Mon/Wed afternoons, and PED 121 – Walk, Jog, Run meets Mon/Wed mornings and Mon/Wed evenings. These classes meet on the Tarboro campus.

In the Fit and Well for Life class, emphasis will be placed on wellness through the study of nutrition, weight control, stress management, and consumer facts on exercise and fitness. This course is designed to help individuals plan a personal fitness program.

The Walk, Jog, Run class covers the basic concepts involved in safety and effectively improving cardiovascular fitness.

If cultural enrichment is an interest, ECC is offering courses in mythology and religion. The mythology course, HUM 130 –- Myth in Human Culture, will meet on the Rocky Mount campus on Tuesday evenings and will look at the myths and legends around the world and their influence on our culture. Class discussions will include the Greek legends, the stories of King Arthur, and the concepts of heroes including Superman.

Three online religion courses will be led by instructor Paul Tolbert. One of these courses is REL 110 – World Religions, which introduces students to the five major religions of the world: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, and the beliefs and traditions of each. The two other religion courses –- REL 211 and 212 –- are focused studies of the Old and New Testaments.

For those interested in history, the college is offering two American history survey classes. HIS 131 – American History I –- will be held on the Tarboro campus on Tues/Thurs mornings. HIS 132 –- American History II –- will be held on the Rocky Mount campus on Thursday evenings.

For those with a more specialized interest in history, HIS 226 –- The Civil War, will be held on the Tarboro campus on Tuesday afternoons. A popular course, HIS 141 –- Genealogy and Local History, will be offered on the Tarboro campus on Tuesday evenings. This course will show individuals how to trace their family history and conduct interviews and gather information about their families and their role in communities.
