Historic Preservation Trades Certificate Program

The Preservation Trades School in September is a precursor to Edgecombe Community College’s new continuing education certificate program in Historic Preservation Trades. Six continuing education courses are required to complete the program. Each course meets for two weekends on Saturdays and Sundays.

The classes will be held at historic sites in Edgecombe County or on the Tarboro campus of Edgecombe Community College. A certificate in Historic Preservation Trades will be earned after completion of the six continuing education courses.

October Class on Southern Architecture

A class on “Southern Architecture” will be held October 11 & 12 and October 25 & 26, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The workshop will feature four experts in architecture history and building trades. Each day will cover a different time period, followed by a tour of period structures in the area.

The class will meet on the Tarboro campus in the Fleming Building, Room 113. Tuition for the Southern Architecture class is $60. In addition, the two required books will cost $50 total.

• Saturday, October 11 – John Wood, preservation/restoration specialist with the N.C. State Preservation Office Early construction technology, vernacular styles, and colonial styles with tours of 18th century buildings
• Sunday, October 12 – Scott Power, regional supervisor, N.C. Office of Archives and History Federal styles, classical revival, and romantic styles with tours of the Blount-Bridgers House and other antebellum homes
• Saturday, October 25 – Nancy Van Dolsen, architectural and landscape historian Victorian styles including Second Empire, Queen Anne, Stick, and tour of late 19th century homes and churches
• Sunday, October 26 – Michelle Michael, preservation architectural historian/historic preservation specialist 20th century styles including Eclectic, Neoclassical, Tudor, and Modern

November Class on Brick Masonry

A class on “Brick Masonry for Historic Buildings” will be held November 8 & 9 and November 22 & 23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The workshop will teach participants how to use appropriate masonry tools to repair plaster and brickwork including mixing and applying mortar. Work will be done at Coolmore Plantation (c. 1859), a National Historic Landmark.

Laura Blokker will be one of several instructors to demonstrate and guide students. She is a preservation consultant with Southeast Preservation in Elm City, NC, and holds a master’s degree in preservation studies from Tulane University.

Additional Classes in Spring and Summer 2009

Two additional workshops will be held during the Spring 2009 semester and two during the Summer 2009 term. Topics will be roofing, decorative arts, window restoration, and carpentry.
