Historic Preservation Trades

The Historic Preservation Technology curriculum introduces students to a broad range of issues and topics in the preservation program. The program emphasizes hands-on skills on preserving historic structures as well as learning the history, preservation and government regulations, and basic business skills to work in the preservation field. Students will learn how to repair historic structures using appropriate technology to meet preservation and environmental standards. Some of the course work will take place in historic structures.

Course work includes courses in architectural history and styles, construction techniques, preservation planning, real estate development, and special programs on historic methods and tools of construction. In addition, students will learn about site studies, basic drafting, researching and documenting historic structures, and conservation plans.

Job Opportunities
Employment opportunities exist with companies specializing in restoration and remodeling work, local historic commissions, state and federal preservation agencies, museums, and construction firms. The program and the jobs combine both indoor and outdoor activities.

Course Information
Courses will be offered days and evenings. For more information, contact Historic Preservation Program Coordinator Monika Fleming at (252) 823-5166, ext. 241, or flemingm@edgecombe.edu.
