The Travel Abroad Program of Edgecombe Community College began in 2007. The program is open to ECC students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the community. Scholarships are available on a per trip basis.
The colleges first excursion was an eight-day tour of Ireland in October 2007. Travelers visited Dublin, Ennis, Ring of Kerry, Killarney, and Waterford.
In October 2008, the Travel Abroad Program headed to France, and participants toured Paris, Normandy, Brittany, and Chateaux country.
Twenty-three participated in the college's third trip, a nine-day tour of Italy in March 2011, making it the largest group since the program began. The trip began and ended in Rome, with visits to Pisa and the Tuscany region.
In March 2012, travelers headed to Spain for a ten-day tour that featured stops in Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Costa del Sol, and Seville.
From April 12 to April 21, 2013, the ECC group toured Great Britain. The itinerary included Stonehenge, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, Edinburgh, and Cambridge. Several of the travelers posted daily accounts. Check out their blog at travel.edgecombe.edu.
"Taking trips with our Travel Abroad Program has helped me learn to appreciate cultures unlike our own," says Dr. Deborah Lamm, president of the college. "Global education is part of our mission as a community college. Since the workplace is global in nature because of the Internet, our students have to be able to communicate with people in other countries."
The 2014 trip is a 9-day Baltic Capitals Cruise from May 27 through June 6. Stops include Copenhagen, Denmark; Berlin, Germany; Tallin, Estonia; St. Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland; and Stockholm, Sweden. To see more details, click here.
