Rural Entrepreneurship Through Action Learning (REAL)

Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning is an enterprise program offering students the opportunity to learn how to become entrepreneurs. REAL is an international non-profit organization that is in partnership with selected participating community colleges and high schools in rural and economically distressed areas. The REAL program assists and empowers a person with entrepreneurial interests and abilities to plan and start a business or trade.

The REAL program at ECC is an experiential course in which participants analyze their own community and research, plan, open, and own enterprises intended to contribute to the local economy and provide meaningful employment for their creators. REAL gives participants the chance to own and operate their own business, as well as the chance to receive the instruction, guidance, and support needed to operate a successful business. With a completed business plan, the participant is eligible to apply for potential funding through various funding sources in North Carolina and through the N.C. REAL Revolving Loan.

The REAL program at ECC is a 36 contact hour course, generally offered over twelve weeks. It introduces hands-on techniques and procedures for planning and opening a small business, including the personal qualities needed for entrepreneurship. Emphasis is placed on market research, finance, time management, and day-to-day activities of owning/operating a small business. Upon completion, students should be able to write and implement a viable business plan and seek funding. The program can be offered for continuing education or for curriculum credit. No previous business knowledge or business experience is necessary for entry into REAL I class.
