Health Occupations
In recent years, the demand for health services has been increasing
and the shortage of health personnel continues to be critical. With an
accelerated growth of population in North Carolina and the rapid advancement
in medical technology, in-service training is one approach to meeting
the challenges of the future. The following courses are offered in the
health occupations area:
- CPR
- Substance Abuse
- First Responder
- Emergency Medical Technician
- Home Companion Aide
- Medication Aide
- Nurse Assistant Level I & II
Emergency Care
In addition to the previous classes, Edgecombe Community College
offers a variety of prehospital emergency care courses. The purpose of
the emergency care courses is to educate students in providing prehospital
medical treatment to seriously ill or injured patients. The focus of
Edgecombe Community College is to meet the training needs for the growth
and development of a successful EMS system. The EMS courses that are
offered include:
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Emergency Medical Technician Refresher
- Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-I)
- Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P)
Home Companion Aide
The Home Companion Aide course is designed to prepare students
to render assistance to aged persons and families who need support with
personal care and home maintenance. This course can be custom designed
for specific home health care agencies based upon their needs
Medication Aide
This 24-contact-hour course is designed to meet the training
requirements for the administration and medication especially in long-term
care facilities. Requirements are a high school diploma and Nurse Assistant
I certification (active). The course covers the six rights of medication
administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics include medication
administration via the oral, topical, and instillation routes, medical
asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology, and medical implications. Upon completion,
students should be able to take competency exams and demonstrate skills
necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide
Registry.
Nurse Assistant
Also very popular is ECC’s Nurse Assistant Program. The
college’s Nurse Assistant I course prepares graduates to help registered
and practical nurses and physicians care for patients. Graduates may
be employed in homes, hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, nursing
homes, and extended care facilities. Upon completion, students should
be able to take the competence exam and demonstrate skills necessary
to qualify for listing on the Nurse Assistant Level I Registry. For those
students interested in more responsibility and greater rewards, ECC also
offers a Nurse Assistant II course. After successfully completing the
course and a skill/competency evaluation, students are able to apply
for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the N.C. Board of Nursing Aide Registry.
Students interested in the NA II class must be listed on the N.C. registry
as an NA I, have a high school diploma or the equivalent, and have a
current CPR card.
