General Education Development (GED) Program

On Campus (Basic Skills Center)
The General Education Development (GED) Program is geared for the adult who, after dropping out of public school, returns to complete his/her work and earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. The program is administered by the Basic Skills Department of Edgecombe Community College.

Admission
To be admitted to the GED program, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  • He or she must be 18 years old or older. Students who are 16 and 17 may enroll with the principal and superintendent’s written permission, in addition to that of the parent or legal guardian.
  • Complete student application and registration forms.

Tuition Fees
Books are supplied by the college for student use in class.

Testing Fees
Students taking the GED test must pay a $7.50 testing fee. This fee is good for a 5-year period. There is an additional $2.50 charge for an essay retest. Students also must submit a copy of their social security card prior to testing.

Requirements
In order to prepare for the GED test, a student must gain competency in the following subjects: Writing, Literature, Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies. A minimum score of 410 is required to pass a GED test, with a total score of 2250 required to earn a GED diploma.

Off Campus
Edgecombe Community College operates off-campus classes for GED students in Edgecombe County at any approved location where 12 or more interested students may gather. Any county citizen who meets the above admission requirements may attend. Attendance and interest in the class are important factors. A person may be dropped if either of these becomes a problem.

Time Frame
There are no set hours of attendance for completion of a unit of work; the emphasis is on competency and the successful completion of expected objectives. The learning materials are semi-programmed. Thus, students progress at their own rate of learning. Students may continue to work and re-enroll in the program until they successfully complete all requirements.

Requirements for Graduation
Guidance and counseling are part of the services offered by the Basic Skills lab. The Basic Skills instructors will set up an individual study program for students.
