Geriatric Aide Training

Edgecombe Community College partnered with Golden LivingCenter - Tarboro to offer the first Geriatric Aide class at ECC in the Spring of 2012. The college plans continue partnering with organizations to offer the class for Nurse Assistants who are interested in receiving Geriatric Aide training, as interest is determined.

Geriatric Aide training provides advanced training for the Nurse Aide I. The course focuses on geriatric care with an emphasis on person-centered care concepts, hydration, nutrition, mental health, dementia, behavioral challenges, pain management, palliative care, and stress management. Upon completion, students are eligible for listing as a geriatric nurse aide with the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry.

Registration for Geriatric Aide is by completed application process only. Applicants must be 18 years of age. At least eight (8) students are needed to hold the class. ECC is eager to offer the course for organizations who would like to enhance the training for Nurse Assistant employees.

A Career Readiness Certificate with appropriate scores is required prior to application. Applications will be reviewed for accuracy and completion and the student will be registered for a class based on availability. Classes must be paid for at the time of registration. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The fee for Geriatric Aide training is $183.50 (subject to change). This includes tuition, class materials, and required malpractice insurance. This does not include uniforms or criminal background check and drug screen expenses, if required. Background checks, drug screens, and uniforms will be discussed during class orientation.

Requirements for the course include:

  • Career Readiness Certificate (CRC)
  • Completed and signed application
  • Proof of Nurse Aide Registry
  • Proof of completion of an approved nurse aide training program
  • Negative PPD (must remain current through duration of clinical)
