Admission Policy and Procedures
Health Information Technology
Each step must be completed before proceeding to the next step. Admission into health science programs is competitive and is based on a points-based ranking system. The number of students accepted into health science programs is determined by space available and may therefore vary each term.
Step I Application Process
(Must be completed by June 15, October 15, or March 15)
- Applicants must submit a Health Information Technology Application and an ECC Application to the Student Services Department by June 15 to be considered for fall admission. For spring admission, the forms must be submitted by October 15. For summer admission, the forms must be submitted by March 15. Subsequent dates for acceptance of applications are established if space becomes available prior to a semester’s admission.
- Applicants must submit official transcripts of high school graduation or equivalency and all post-secondary course work. (Currently enrolled high school students submit a partial transcript at time of application. A final transcript is submitted at the time of graduation.)
- Students must complete requirements for ENG 090/095 and RED 090/095 or an equivalent course with a C or better or achieve a placement score of 80 for Reading and 86 for Writing on the Accuplacer.
- Students must complete requirements for Math 060 and Math 070 or an equivalent course with a C or better or achieve a placement score of 55 on the Numerical Accuplacer and a 55 on the Elementary Algebra Accuplacer.
Step II Permission to Take the Hobet
Applicants must achieve minimum composite and reading scores on the Hobet. Minimum scores are set by the program each year and are based on the national average for Health Occupation students. Applicants may be allowed to test a second time after a 30-day waiting period if available slots are not filled after the first test. The highest score is counted toward admission. Test scores are valid for two years. Students are required to pay $25.00 for each testing session after the first test.
Step III Conditional Acceptance
- Applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA in required Health Information Technology curriculum course work. Applicants with the highest total points in the following categories are considered for conditional acceptance:
- Hobet composite percentage score
- GPA on a minimum of 12 hours in required Health Information Technology curriculum course work
- Required biology courses completed
- Health-related degrees and/or current certifications (Must submit proof by application deadline)
- Letters of conditional acceptance with enclosed medical forms are mailed to selected students. The number of students selected for conditional acceptance depends on clinical space available. Applicants who are not selected on the first round are placed on an alternate list. Students will continue to be selected from the alternate list until the program is filled.
Step IV Acceptance
- Students must submit a completed medical form within a time frame of 12 months prior to Fall Semester enrollment.
- Letters of acceptance are mailed to students.
- Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in Health Information Technology curriculum course work prior to admission.
Readmission and Transfer Policy and Procedures
Students may apply for readmission to the Health Information Technology programs two times. Students desiring to transfer from another program or students applying for readmission who have been out for more than five years must take a challenge exam for each HIT course previously completed. Students who have been out of the program for more than one year must meet the admissions and program requirements effective at the time of admission.
