Listservers are "remailers" or computers that intercept data from a source and re-mail to a list of e-mail recipient. A common use is to "re-mail" news articles from a specific Usenet news group. Other uses might be for an instructor to send a message to his listserver and have it re-mailed to all the students in his class (for assignments, syllabus, etc.)

Below is a list of popular listservers that you may want to consider subscribing to along with instructions for subscribing .

COMMCOL - A daily service that delivers contents of the Community College Usenet Discussion about Community Colleges.

To Subscribe: Send e-mail to listserv@lsv.uky.edu. Leave the SUBJECT: line blank. In the message body, type the following message: SUBSCRIBE COMMCOLL (your name). Leave the rest of the message body blank. Example: SUBSCRIBE COMMCOLL James Keen.

THE DAILY BRIEF - A daily news service that is free for the asking.

To Subscribe: Send an e-mail message to: db-request@listserv.catone.net. In the SUBJECT line, include the word subscribe. Do not place anything in the message "body." To unsubscribe, send a message to the same address with the word unsubscribe in the SUBJECT line.

ROOTS-L - A genealogy listserver with extensive information from the ROOTS-L Usenet news group.

To Subscribe: Send an e-mail message to: ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com (capital letters are important). Include the word subscribe in the BODY of the message. Leave the SUBJECT line blank. To unsubscribe, send a message to the same address with unsubscribe in the BODY of the message.

EDUPAGE - An educational oriented daily newsletter linking computers to education.

To Subscribe: Send an e-mail message to: listproc@educom.unc.edu with the message "subscribe edupage John Doe" (use your own name and do not include the quotes). Leave the SUBJECT line blank. Send the same message with unsubscribe when you want to end the service.

FUN FACTS - A daily funny, amazing, educational, etc. fact.

To Subscribe: Send an e-mail message to: majordomo@missing.link.ca. Include the message "subscribe funfacts" (without the quotes) in the body. Leave the SUBJECT blank. To unsubscribe, send "unsubscribe funfacts" in a message. Nothing should appear in the BODY except the message (no signatures, etc.).
