Edgecombe Community College
This FAQ is intended to help students, faculty and staff at Edgecombe Community College install and maintain their Electronic Mail Accounts. If these answers do not solve your problem, please contact Jim Keen at keenj@edgecombe.cc.nc.us OR simply keenj on the ECC network.
Two E-Mail Systems? Yes, ECC employees and ECC students use different e-mail systems. ECC employees use GroupWise while students use I-Mail.
How do I access I-Mail? Students access I-Mail through the ECC HomePage at http://www.edgecombe.cc.nc.us. Look for the word MAIL under the large picture. Click on MAIL to login to I-Mail -- enter your USERID and PASSWORD.
How do I access Groupwise? ECC employees access GroupWise by starting the Groupwise Client on ECC computers in labs and offices. When the Groupwise client starts, you will be prompted to enter your USERID and PASSWRORD.
What is my Userid? At ECC, there are two versions of the userid: the student and the ECC employee. ECC employees have USERIDs that include the last name and first name initial -- i.e., keenj or Jim Keen. In the case of identical last names and first name initial, then a second initial for a middle name is used -- i.e., Jackie Baker Keen is keenjb. Student USERIDs are the full student last name + (a period) + the full student first name -- i.e., Tom Smith would be smith.tom. When sending mail on campus, the userid is all that is needed in the address. However, when sending mail off campus, the domain name (edgecombe.cc.nc.us) must be included with an "@" separating the userid and the domain name -- keenj@edgecombe.cc.nc.us.
What is my Password? The initial password at ECC is always 12345. Obviously this does not provide security, so you need to change the password at your first convenience.
How do I change my Password?
Students: From an Internet Web Browser, access the ECC Web Page. Click on the item marked MAIL (under the large picture). A logon screen will appear
and you should logon using your userid and existing password. When you have accessed your mail account, click on the "Change Password" option and follow instructions.
ECC employees should access GroupWise, click on Tools Menu, Options, Security, and then the Password Tab. Follow instructions.
What is the Finger Procedure? Finger is a process where a remote individual can "finger" your E-Mail address and receive personal information about you. You control the amount of personal information, so your security should not be compromised.
How do I change my Finger Information? From an Internet Web Browser, access the ECC Web Page. Scroll down to the second page and click on the item marked ECC Mail Accounts. A logon screen will appear and you should logon using your userid and existing password. Choose the option "Change Finger Information" and follow the prompts.
How do I forward Mail? In some situations, like vacation periods, you may want to temperately forward mail to another E-Mail box -- i.e., your personal at-home E-Mail account. Follow the procedure for accessing your E-Mail Account (see paragraph above) and choose "Change Mail Forwarding Information" and type in your new complete E-Mail address.
How can I leave a Vacation Message? When you are away for an extended period, like a vacation, you can leave a message for people who attempt to send you E-Mail. Access you E-Mail account as above and choose "Change Vacation Message." This message is limited to 1,000 characters. Be sure to remove you vacation message when you return.
How do I send a message across campus? The neat thing about having an on-campus E-Mail Server is the ease of sending E-Mail within the organization. Since E-Mail Userids are always Last Name and then first initial, then you simply type keenj in the "To:" on the browser and the mail is delivered to keenj's mailbox. Sending E-Mail to a student or the President is done in the same manner.
Is my E-Mail Private? No! Although E-Mail is intended to be a private communication, any communication that passes through other computers should be treated as NOT PRIVATE. Treat E-Mail like sending a postcard through the U.S. Mail.
